Find The Online Influencers

Friday, July 1st, 2011

In the old days people were left in the dark when they were not happy with a company’s product or service. May be they tell a friend or two to avoid XYZ company but that was about it.

But, today that same person can let their whole Facebook or Twitter list know about their experience.  Smart companies recognize that social media has given customers a greater capacity to influence buying decisions and are taking steps to ensure that positive relationships are built with key influencers.

Finding Influencers

The first step toward developing such relationships is finding who these influencers are and where they maintain a presence online. You can use comprehensive brand reputation monitoring tools — such as Alterian SM2, Trackur or Brandseye — for this purpose.

Even free tools such as Tweetbeep, which monitors conversations within Twitter based on keywords you input, or Twitter search can help identify potential influencers.

Once the list of influencers has been identified, merchants can determine their influence by using following tool.

Twitter Grader

Twitter Grader is one of a set of measurement tools provided by Hubspot.

Twitter Grader is a part of the “Grader” suite, from web marketing company Hubspot, to help marketers analyze the effect of their efforts across a variety of channels, including Twitter, Facebook, blogs and more. The free suite of tools serves a two-fold purpose. Not only do they assist marketers in research, but they also help Hubspot gain exposure.

To determine a person’s — or company’s — influence, Twitter Grader looks at factors such as: number of followers, influence of people following the user, frequency of updates, the ratio between followers and those the user follows, and the degree of engagement, such as retweets, @mentions, and replies.

Twitter Grader scores tend to range higher than Klout and the other tools mentioned in the article. For example, Practical eCommerce receives a score of 98.2 out of 100. But the score on my Twitter username, @pchaney, is 100 out of 100. Such a high score causes me to be suspect of its validity. Therefore, I would be certain to use at least one or two of the other tools on the list, as well.

Affiliate Direct Linking Activity Has Doubled

Friday, April 1st, 2011

Direct linking, sometimes also referred to as ‘URL Hijacking’, occurs on paid search when affiliate marketers assume the identity in paid ads of the represented merchant.

Direct linking occurs when the affiliate uses the merchant’s website as the display URL, with an affiliate link as the destination URL. The effect of this tactic is that the affiliate does not need to operate a website because it is directing traffic straight from the search page to the merchant’s website.

This tactic, while economical, efficient, and easy for the affiliate, creates problems for merchants.

Common issues include:

1.   Channel Conflict

Channel conflict arises when the merchant and the affiliate are advertising on the same keyword set. In this instance, Google, Yahoo, and Bing only show one advertiser at a time with the same display URL.

Because the affiliate and the advertiser are using the same display URL, the two are in essence competing to be served on the SERP. The end result is a bidding war between the affiliate and the merchant on whose behalf the affiliate is advertising in the first place.

2.   Messaging Conflict

Messaging conflict occurs when the affiliate has developed its own ad content that doesn’t match your messaging.

Examples include off-brand messaging, outdated offers, or offers that you do not want promoted against certain keyword combinations. As in issue #1, here, only one ad can be served at a time. If the ad served is the affiliate’s ad, then your brand message isn’t being seen.

3.    Revenue Wars

Revenue wars refer to the struggle between your SEM team and affiliate teams to each gain credit for conversions, actions, and/or sales from paid search keywords.

If revenue is not properly attributed to the SEM team, for instance, then ROI calculations will suffer, causing issues with your bidding methodology and most likely the logic and algorithms in use by your campaign management vendor.

Because we have the affiliate ad on the one hand, and the SEM team’s ads on the other hand vying for impression share, it is likely that revenue attribution will be skewed when direct linking is deployed.

Some of the reasons for the recent raise in direct linking is due to increase use of social media. Most platforms allow people to share links from their social media pages. If you can imagin 100′s thousands of people share links in hope their friends will click on it for a quick buck.

Another reason for the increase is due to push button software that allows people to clone campaigns. This puts a series of Identical link throughout the internet.

The last reason is that people are just too lazy to build a blog or web page. People only look for quick and easy solutions.

There are great benefits to building landing pages on hosted domains. You can capture email addresses and create branding with your own site. Your site could gain SEO rank by itself and get organic traffic and long term income.

The Hidden Value Of Affiliates

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Affiliate marketing is an old concept and many people think they know what affiliates are. Such as people who recommend sites in exchange for commission on a sale.

In a (Click Per Action) CPA model, the affiliate will recommend a site in exchange for an action, such as bring in an e-mail address or a zip code, in which they will be paid.

But often times the real value of Affiliates is over looked.  Many affiliates will spend their own money, resources, and time to invest in your company and your products and services.  Affiliates invest their time and money at no cost to the product owner.  Many times they do this without a guarantee of a commission.

One of the hidden benefits of affiliates, all customers that are referred to your company become your customers that you can re-target later on in the sales process.  So building relationships with affiliates is one of the most valuable skills that you as a small business owner, or an online business owner have.

This could be developing an incentive program, such as rewards and bonuses; events and training are also great benefits to affiliates.  Many affiliates determine how well they’ll promote something depending on the return on investments (ROI).

So making your commission structure in such a way that it allows the affiliate to gain more return on their investment as they send more and more customers your way is one way to build this business into an affiliate partnership.

You want to look at your relationship between affiliates and your business as a partnership.  Another benefit of having affiliates promote your products or services is that they have already built a trusted relationship and value with your prospects.

When an affiliate recommends your products or services to your prospect, your business benefits by those affiliates granting your business with great trust in the eyes of your prospect. Simply by their recommendation.

Therefore, when a customer signs up and buys your product or service, they’re more likely to stay with your company and be satisfied with the product or service they receive because it was recommended by a trusted affiliate.  You will see lower refund rates and hire customer loyalty.

In summary, developing an affiliate getting mechanism within your business can greatly increase your bottom line.  When affiliates sign up for your product or service, you could recruit former customers or find professional affiliates, recruit people to your affiliate program.

If you build a partnership with these affiliates, you will find that your business will run on basically auto pilot, lower your overhead and eliminate your cost in advertising and raising your profits overall.
