I am not sure if you use Google for your advertising or not. But, I have noticed a few trends that worry me a bit. As you know Google delivered an other slap in June of 2010. This time they added new qualifications to
their ranking system or at least gave it more weight. (I’ll talk more about this in another post)
In this post I wanted to make you aware the direction Google is heading. I believe it is going to get harder for small time internet marketer over the next 5 years to make a good living online.
You have noticed Google removing 10,000’s of affiliates from it’s adwords network. The one who have stayed are now experiencing the Google creep. That’s when the price per click creeps up instead of down, until the point the advertiser can no longer afford the cost. What this means is Google only wants large business with big budgets to advertise on their network.
But, wait it gets better.(that’s sarcasm) Let’s take look at a high value keyword like “Mortage Rates”. If you look at the top of the page you see a big Google ad that saids”Compare Mortage Rates”. Then click on the ad and you will see quotes from the largest fortune 500 companies. How is the little guy going to compete with that.
Google is controlling the traffic and giving it to the highest bidder… I’m talking Multi Million dollar contracts. It’s not going to stop there, they will use this in other verticals too.
Wait I have more. Maybe you think SEO is the answer - think again. Google is now paying for content generation and building there own content to rank in their own search engine. Then they are selling Adsence ads on the content pages. Yahoo is doing the same with associated content. What is means is that you are going to have to compete with a multi billion dollar company to gain rankings in almost all the high valued keywords. Think of wikipedia on steroids.
So, what are you the small time internet marketer going to do about it. First of all this push is going to take about five years to complete. If your going to make money online you will need to act fast and do it now. Secondly their are other ad networks that have a lot of traffic and can compete with Google if you give them support. So, act fast and find alternatives.
